Accessibility Features for Seniors
Your phone and computer already have powerful tools to make text bigger, talking easier, and everything clearer — most people just don't know they exist. They're free and built right in.
These features are already on your device — no downloading needed!
Apple, Android, and Windows have spent years building accessibility tools for people with vision, hearing, or mobility differences. Many seniors find these features make daily device use much more comfortable and enjoyable.
Make Things Easier to See
Make Text Bigger
Increase the size of text across all apps — messages, email, websites, and more.
- iPhone: Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size → drag slider right
- Android: Settings → Display → Font Size → drag slider right
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Text Size → drag slider right
Zoom In on Anything
Magnify any part of your screen — like a digital magnifying glass for small text or images.
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Zoom → turn On, then double-tap three fingers to zoom in
- Android: Settings → Accessibility → Magnification → turn On
- Windows: Press Windows key + Plus (+) to zoom in anywhere
Dark Mode (Easier on Eyes at Night)
Switches your screen to white text on a dark background — much easier on the eyes in dim lighting.
- iPhone: Settings → Display & Brightness → Dark
- Android: Settings → Display → Dark Mode → On
- Windows: Settings → Personalization → Colors → Dark
Increase Screen Brightness
A brighter screen makes everything easier to see, especially in a lit room.
- iPhone/Android: Swipe down from the top of the screen → drag the brightness slider (sun icon) up
- Windows: Settings → System → Display → Brightness
Hear Everything More Clearly
Turn Up the Volume
Press the volume buttons on the side of your phone. Or ask Siri/Google: "Turn up the volume."
- All devices: Use the physical volume buttons on the side of your phone or tablet. On a computer, use the speaker icon on the taskbar.
Captions on Videos
Turn on automatic captions (subtitles) for YouTube and other videos so you can read along.
- YouTube: Tap the CC button on any video
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles & Captioning → On
- Android: Settings → Accessibility → Caption Preferences → On
Flash Alerts for Calls & Texts
Your phone can flash its camera light when you get a call or message — great if you often miss alerts.
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Audio/Visual → LED Flash for Alerts → On
- Android: Settings → Accessibility → Hearing Enhancements → Flash Notification → On
Type Less — Talk More
Voice-to-Text (Dictation)
Instead of typing, just speak — your phone turns your words into text. Works in messages, email, Google — anywhere you type.
- iPhone: Tap any text box → tap the microphone key on the keyboard → speak
- Android: Tap any text box → tap the microphone icon on the keyboard → speak
- Windows: Press Windows key + H → speak
Read Screen Aloud
Your device can read text on the screen out loud — webpages, emails, messages — in a clear voice.
- iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Speak Screen → On, then swipe down with two fingers from the top
- Android: Settings → Accessibility → Select to Speak → On, then tap the icon and tap text to hear it read aloud
Auto-Correct & Spell Check
Your phone already corrects typos automatically. If it makes a mistake, just tap the underlined word to fix it.
- All phones: This is usually on by default. If words are being changed incorrectly, go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Auto-Correction to adjust.
Ask Your Phone Instead of Typing
Every phone has a built-in voice assistant you can talk to — completely free. Just say the wake word and ask anything.
Siri (iPhone)
Say "Hey Siri" then ask:
- Call my daughter
- Set an alarm for 8am
- What's the weather today?
- Send a text to John
- Turn up the volume
Google Assistant (Android)
Say "Hey Google" then ask:
- Call my son
- Remind me to take my pill at noon
- Navigate home
- What time is it in Denver?
- Open YouTube
Voice Typing (Windows)
Press Windows + H then say:
- Open email
- Search for recipes
- What's today's date?
- Turn on dark mode
- How do I spell necessary?
